postheadericon Does anyone know of a good craft for kids about Fire Safety Week?

I work in a library and we have storytimes for the kids each week. We need a Fire Safety craft for Fire Safety week. I’ve looked all over the internet for one and have been so far unsuccessful. So I was wondering if anyone knew one off of the top of their head.

postheadericon What punishment would you want to see given to a person who alegedly eluded police in a high speed chase?

There has been a HEATED discussion about punishments handed out to people who elude police in high speed chases. So I want YOU to be the jury on this one.

In this scenario, the person successfully evades the police at night on dark country roads and a rather calm and respectful individual with similar clothing and bike is later found. The police and the courts believe they have the right person. Nobody was injured and the roads were nearly empty. Biggest risk was the rider killing himself and the police killing themselves or one of the few people on the road that night (They did 130MPH).

So you are now on a jury! Some idiot decides to take police on a wild and reckless chase approaching speeds of 135MPH through several counties. The jerk evades road blocks and shows no respect to the police authority by not stopping even when the police are side by side. The rider escapes and the pursuit is called off shortly after calling out a helicopter. Armed with only a partial plate, dark video and general desciption of bike color and helmet and things like that. an All points bullartin is put out. A tip is called in and an individual matching the description is found on the phone laughing with a local woman, a stranger who was helping him call a wrecker for his broken down bike. He is arrested but is completely cooperative and extremely respectful of the officers. He spends the night in jail before bailing himself out and repairing his failed front brakes.

Now for the other side. This individual is an Air Force veteran and successful computer engineer with no record and only a few speeding tickets. Born poor in a 3rd world country and schooled in some of the toughest and most violent schools, he chose the right path in life and graduated with honer leaving. Closest to being arrested was being put in handcuffs after being harrased by cops who tried to accuse him of spraying graffiti on a wall at 7AM on a weekday, when in fact his chain on his bike(which the officer never looked at) was broken and he was waiting on assitance when the police shoewed up. He is a highly trained and skilled rider with race track experience. He has never been in an accident, sold drugs and does not believe in software and music piracy. He also does not drink or smoke and is very health concious. He is single and is passionate about helping troubled youth stay on the right path. He has spoken an numerous high schools and has been voted best presenter by the students. He also offers free training about motorcycle safety and other things online. Specifically he has been a very vocal advocate of discouraging people from running from the police on bikes.

Evidence:

Low quality police video
Very close match on a few items of clothing and three letters(sticker) on his jacket
Multiple officers written reports of what they say in pitch black night with their spotlights

Maybe you think they have the wrong person, maybe you don’t, but let’s assume that although not 100% solid it at least looks like this individual very closely matches the description of the runner but there is no description of the actual person at all(can’t see them in riding gear). The judge thinks they have the right person and would like a minimum of 30 days in prison and a felony conviction. This will ruin the the man’s life and prevent him from being able to help more kids and since he uses a lot of his own money to fund his efforts to helps troubled kids, he will be very limited there.

What do YOU think? Did he do it? If he did, will you support the judges proposal? If not what will you support? 00 fine and probation? The fine and community service, perhaps focusing on preventing other riders from putting their lives and the public at risk? House arrest? Critical factors are:

Should there be anymore jail-time than the already spent night in jail and should there be a felony conviction?

postheadericon DIY Replacement windows?

My husband and I bought an older house (1930?) and it’s got the most awful windows you can imagine. When we bought it, the basement bedroom windows were painted and nailed shut and covered with plastic. For fire safety, we had someone "fix" the windows, but essentially what he did was sand them down to the point where you can see daylight around the edges. The work was free to us (gift from our realtor) so I couldn’t do much about it. Anyway, I can’t afford to have professionals come in and install all new windows in the house. I’d like to, before winter, at least get the basement bedroom windows replaced so my kids, my husband and I don’t freeze to death. Where can I find REALLY good, visual, step-by-step information (book form or online would be great) to buying windows from Home Depot or Lowes and installing them myself? Thanks!
RE: expanding foam – I don’t want the windows to be inoperable.

postheadericon Where can my 11 yr old niece talk about mature topics online?

She’s very curious and loves talk about anything and everything. After a bad experience on Facebook, her parents decided she should create an account somewhere that isn’t connected to her in real life where she can talk about whatever she wants without damage from friends & family. Of course, her parents would monitor the account for her safety. She and her parents already have a great open and honest conversation where she gets most of her questions answered but there are age related issues they can’t answer. For example, her parents have already answered her questions about masturbation but she wants to know if and how much she can talk about with friends her age without feeling outcast. (Btw, I know some people will object to a kid talking about mature topics at her age, but she’s going to do it anyway, so her parents want her supervised and to trust her parents.)

But Yahoo Answers and girlsaskguys.com have age limits and she’s too young. What’s a place that’s professional and legit but without an age limit?
Strangely, I can’t find a single pre-teen forum from Google. Maybe 11-12 year olds never use forums? Just old farts like me.

postheadericon Where is the best place to order chickens online?

My mum wants to raise some chickens on her small ranch. We raised ducks a few times when I was a kid, so I know she’d be competent at caring for them. I want to be sure she gets quality chicks who aren’t poorly bred and thereby susceptible to a lot of diseases, and I’d also like the hatchery to be trustworthy. For example, several of the big ones claim that Ameraucana and Araucana chickens are the same and they are not. While I have no issue with her getting mixed-breed "Easter Egg chickens", I don’t want the hatchery charging her for some purebreds, not to mention how distrustful I then find their other information such as health and safety. I don’t want to give money to an organization that breeds chickens in horrible environments.

If it’s a genuine farm that does shipping, that’s even better. She lives in Colorado.

postheadericon Which store can I buy NOT order online, some pepper spray or mace?

YA doesn’t have a "Personal Safety" category so I put my question here :)
I remember when I was kid seeing mace in stores like Strauss Auto and other common stores. Also I know several women in my family had a can one person even had a small can of mace that attached to her key chain. Now it seems as though you can’t find mace anywhere. Is it illegal now?
Do you need a permit for it?lol Seriously though, I don’t see it like I used to.

postheadericon Retraining Order Question.?

A person has stated in an online forum that she has pictures of my car and my friends car. I also believe that she is stalking me as she seems to know everywhere I go, where I work, she used to live about 25 min away from me, this summer she moved closer to where I live. I fear for not only my safety but my kids safety. The other issue I have is that she is my ex-husband’s girlfriend.

Can I get a restraining order against her?

postheadericon Not sure what to think. How would you react to this?

I’ve been chatting with this guy on MySpace for several months. He’s never revealed his real name or posted any pictures of himself, which he said was because of Internet safety concerns, which I can understand, so I was cool with that. He’s sort of odd and geeky, but he’s nice and I like him. I just kind of assumed that he was some bored kid who was online without his parents’ permission looking for someone nice to talk to.

Well, just lately I found out that he’s somebody I actually knew in real life. I didn’t know him very well – we were passing acquaintances, and I didn’t even know his full name. I haven’t seen him in person for about a year. I’m pretty sure that he had a crush on me, but he always acted really shy and awkward so I didn’t ask him about it. Anyways, he knew who I was and he found me online.

I’m not quite sure what to make of this. His behavior seems kind of stalkerish, but then again he’s never acted like a stalker at all – he doesn’t send me messages all the time or ask me for personal information. As far as I know, everything he’s told me about himself is true – he just never told me his name. He’s never said anything inappropriate to me, and it seems like he was only looking for a friend the whole time. But I don’t understand why he felt the need to keep his identity a secret from me.

Any insights? :/
